The tension in this piece epitomizes the contrast of physical and non-physical, frailty and strength. The cantilever boosts the strength revealed in the open, negative space. This direct wax construction was built over a tightly resolved newspaper armature. Inspired by “Bart The Bear”, a high profile grizzly found in many movies. His ability to offer a menacing pose with head jutting forward, mouth open wide and lips rolling in full roar on cue captivated me and worked well as an imposing force that pushes the juxtaposition of physical force against the quiet strength of the exposed interior.
